Herbal Definitions
This book is the idea of S.M.Mackenzie who studied Mrs M Grieves Herbal, A
Modern Herbal,
as a text of great interest in looking for alternative methods and remedies in
treating illness. The original reasearch in listing the most appropriate herbs
for an alphabetical listing by ailment was done by her. I have taken her notes
and by use of a computer have rendered her listings into a text format that is
a simplified version of each herbal remedy.Due to the vast amount of
information that is contained in Grieves, each listing was chosen with a
criteria towards ease of use, lack of poisonous qualitys, although not all of
the herbs listed are nontoxic due to the potential usefullness of these herbs,
however toxic herbs are noted in the general heading of each listing. There are
a number of listings that contain illegal herbs, I have retained some of these
as a matter of general interest. A future supplement to this work will contain
a list of all the herbs not included in the original listings.Grieves also
contains a large amount of information on the growing of herbs, dyes, recipes
and methods to discover if a herb has been adulterated and, or its validity.I
hope in the near future to write on each of these subjects, these will be
written as supplements to this work.I also hope to be able to research into the
more unusual herbs in terms of availability of the seeds, bulbs etc.In reading
the Grieves herbal I was amazed by the amount of valuable information preserved
by her, which if you were interested in a particular herb her work was very
usefull, but to find a particular remedy for a particular ailment you would
have to read the whole book, this was the major inspiration for me and
S.M.Mackenzie in writing this work, I hope that there will be a use for this
work, as there does seem to be a growing interest in alternative methods of
treating illness.
It is recommended that the advise of a qualified Physician or Herbalist is
sought, on the use of some of the herbs listed, particularly for persons who are
using prescibed medication, as combinations of drugs can have a stronger,
potentialy more dangerous effect than the individual effect of each
drug.Poisons are often available as a homeopathic prescription, otherwise they
should be avoided except as a last measure for desperate exceptional
circumstances.
All poisons are noted in the General heading.
The source of Grieves information is from the 1640-1914 set, British Herbal
Pharmacopeia (B.H.P.),& Manns Materia Medica 1915.
